Exploring Passion
When first given this task it was challenging to think what passions I have. I tried thinking about activities I participated in high school, but there was nothing that really stood out. So I started thinking about what a passion is, something that gets you excited, that you don’t mind doing, and that you could talk about for hours. The first thing that came to my mind was my trip to London this summer (if you couldn't tell by the header or my About Me I'm slightly obsessed) so I went with it and expanded. What I really loved about going to London was experiencing the culture of a new city. Being in London was unlike anywhere I’d ever been. The way people interacted, the transportation, the sights, the food, the dialect, and the fashion of the city was beyond incredible to be submerged in. Traveling to new places and experiencing their culture is a passion I didn’t realize I had until recently, but it’s something I definitely want to explore more.
Pursuing the passion of world travel will not only be extremely fun, but will prove to be incredibly beneficial for my future. Having experiences abroad will help me to become more globally competent, I will be able to relate to people of other cultures, learn to communicate ideas, and gain new perspectives. Traveling abroad will set me apart from other students because I will have these unique skills. This passion is absolutely captivating because along with seeing all the differences in culture I will also see how similar we all are. It’s incredible to me that everyone in the world has their own struggles, their own strengths, and their own story. Sometimes as I’m driving or walking I like to think about the different people I pass, what’s their story, where are they headed, what’s on their mind. Traveling to different countries and experiencing different cultures lets you in on a completely new story that coincides with your own.
So now what? How am I going to satisfy such a broad and costly passion? I plan to take part in study abroad or co-op abroad. Taking part in the honors program gives me an advantage in managing the cost of studying abroad and co-op is a paid position that will help alleviate costs. These opportunities will give me the ability to see new cultures and spend extended time there. I would absolutely love to go back to London either studying abroad or for co-op and I may or may not have already started looking into where I could do that and planning out my flat. You could say I’m a little excited.
